Institute Contemporary Art – Boston, MA

Nov. 11, 12 8pm

Boston Dance Theatre: The Carol Kaye Project.

BDT performs the first full program of the Carol Kaye Project, a collection of fun, short dance works that celebrate seminal bass guitarist Carol Kaye. As a founding member of the Wrecking Crew, Kaye played on an estimated 10,000 recording sessions with everyone from the Beach Boys to Marvin Gaye, yet she remains relatively unknown. BTD chose choreographers Karole Armitage, Rena Butler, Rosie Herrera, and Jessie Jeanne Stinnett to honor Kaye’s extensive musical repertoire. This diverse cohort of powerhouse American women embody Kaye’s genius through sweaty, whimsical, and thoughtful choreography.

March 7, 2023

Overstory Ouverture – an Opera based on Richard Powers Pulitzer Prize winning novel
Music: Tod Machover
Conductor: Earl Lee
Sejong Soloists, ensemble of 21
Mezzo Soprano: Joyce DiDonato
Director: Karole Armitage

Production: Sejong Soloists

Overstory Overture is scored for mezzo-soprano and strings, percussion, keyboard, and special electronics designed to subtly enhance textures and to underline and interconnect the solo performers.

Joyce DiDonato will sing the role of Patricia Westertord, a scientist who recognizes that trees are social organisms rather than isolated ones. Scorned by the scientific community, her research and persistence lead to a splendid new vision of a synergistic, productive interrelationship between humans and nature.

Overstory is about man's alienation from nature and the need to radically realign ourselves with the non-human world and particularly with trees.

Program
Johann Sebastian Bach
Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G Major, BWV 1048
Arnold Schoenberg
