WORKSHOP
KICKING OFF THE MIT DANCING ENGINEER COMPANY:
Does consciousness arise from the machinery of the body in the creation of a self OR are signals the self?
Variations of this question have been asked by philosophers for millennia. Today, the debate on consciousness is divided by between hard line materialists who believe electric signals ARE the self and those who believe, like Vittorio Gallese, Professor of Human Physiology at the University of Parma Italy, “I MOVE, therefore I think”.

Donkey Jaw Bone – Karole Armitage, Armitage Gone! Dance
Shock Wave – Jennifer Muller, Jennifer Muller/The Works
Threshold – Jacqulyn Buglisi – Buglisi Dance Theatre
WAVES – Carolyn Dorfman, Carolyn Dorfman Dance
Armitage Gone! Dance returns to Jennifer Muller's celebrated annual season featuring women choreographers to present Donkey Jaw Bone, an excerpt from a new work commissioned by National Sawdust and the Mexico Now Festival. The full production will premiere on October 20, 2018 at Brooklyn's National Sawdust, an artist-led venue prioritizing exploration and discovery. The Mexico Now Festival established in 2004, offers audiences the opportunity to experience the vibrant and dynamic range of Mexico’s contemporary art and culture scene.
Donkey Jaw Bone is loosely based on Mexico’s theatrical sport, Lucha Libre. It sits at the border of sport, dance and ritual, invoking connections between sometimes contradictory domains: rural and urban, tradition and modernity, ritual and parody, machismo and feminism, politics and spectacle. Performed on pre-Columbian instruments, the teponaztli (a pitched slit-log drum) and the quijada (a donkey jawbone), the dance draws on Balanchine’s Agon, ancient and contemporary minimalism, drag queen style and re-enacts documentary Lucha wrestling matches.
Live music is performed by Juan Lucero and Peter Basil Bagdanos with Armitage Gone! Dancers Ahmaud Culver, Megumi Eda, Sierra French, Yusaku Komori and Cristian Laverde-Koenig. Costumes by Pilar Limosner. Lighting by Clifton Taylor.
