About the Work
The first in a series of special Artspace commissions with major contemporary artists, David Salle's Black Eyed Susan captures the artist's Postmodern aesthetic. By combining the image of a flower—a formal subject with extensive art historical references—with a vivid, thoroughly Pop color palette, Salle gives this piece an inventiveness that makes it a true contemporary experience.
Since the late 1970's, David Salle's paintings have helped define the post-modern sensibility. He has had over 75 solo exhibitions, including The Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam and the Guggenheim, Bilbao. He has collaborated extensively with choreographer Karole Armitage, designing sets and costumes for many of her dance productions.
